Jogger Fights Off Attacker

From the most recent VA Alert sent out by the Virginia Citizens Defense League.

The attack happened on Hayfield Road near Old Telegraph Road around 10 p.m. Residents say the area, which is close to Hayfield Secondary School, is normally very safe.

“I didn’t hear anything. I didn’t see anything,” the 15-year-old says.

She says she never saw the man until he tried to lift her off the ground.

“I know a lot of people in the area so I was like ‘Maybe someone’s coming up behind me and trying to scare me,’” she said. “But then I was like ‘That grip’s way too tight.’ Then they wouldn’t let go and I was like ‘This is an issue.’”

The teen says she was raised to be aware of her surroundings and able to protect herself so she was carrying mace, but when she went to spray it, it didn’t work correctly.

The man had grabbed her left arm, but her right elbow was free.

“(I) went back and elbowed him right below the chin,” she says.

The teen was able to break free and run home to call police.

She says if there’s ever a next time, she’ll have a surprise waiting for the suspect – a stun gun. She wants to warn her neighbors to be aware and on the lookout so it doesn’t happen to anyone else.

“It’s more the what could have happened that kind of freaks me out, but I try not to think about it,” she says.
