For developing your self protection “game plan”, you need to start with an awareness “play book”.
The majority of criminal assaults can be considered “ambush attacks”.
This means that you need to be aware of places in which you may be subject to what “task fixation” (hat tip to SouthNarc) or “condition brown” (hat tip to Gabe Suarez).
This really just means places and times when you are likely to be distracted.
So how do you build a play book? It is pretty simple really.
Start on a weekday from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to sleep.
The locations of heightened awareness may vary depending in if you drive to work each day or take the Metro Bus and/or Metro Rail

Make sure you understand the concept of “slicing the pie”. Google/Startpage/DuckDuckGo search the phrase slicing the pie tactical and you will find good information to help you out.
Also be sure to Google search for the term “pre-incident indicators” you may also add “law enforcement” to what you type in when you search.
Also be sure to watch YouTube videos of mugging a caught on camera and train yourself to recognize the particular body language of the assailants.
Also pay attention to how multiple assailants often try to distract, triangulate and then corner their victims.
